The honey smelt within perfumes is, in fact, Beeswax; natural, raw material produced by the honeybees of the genus Apis. The word ‘honey', comes from the ancient Hebrew word for ‘enchant’, and symbolically, honey prominently stands for ‘the sweet life’, prosperity, and even immortality.

Coinciding with the weight and meaning of its name, honey is rich, captivating, plump, warm, luxurious, and yet is an easy ingredient to blend with. As a result of a love affair between bees and blossoms, Beeswax is considered one of the sweetest and softest animal notes!

A Little History

Before it was discovered as a crucial ingredient in the perfumery world, Beeswax had been popularly used centuries and decades ago; dating as far as to the Ancient Egyptians who used it to make paint for their artists, whilst the Romans, used it as a skin softener.

Beeswax is naturally produced by the bees and used as the bricks for building their hexagonal combs, where they raise their offspring and store pollen and honey within the hive. Very industrious in their nature, bees hold responsibility for many crucial factors, including pollinating our food supply, supporting the reproduction of wild flowering plants, and of course, producing irresistibly sweet honey!

In more detail, Beeswax is specifically produced by the female worker bees through the consumption of honey produced from the collected flower nectar. With a lifespan of approximately 35 days, the worker bees possess wax producing glands on their abdomens, from which they excrete wax.

Moreover, the wonders of bees continue to impress. This is to avoid the beeswax from becoming too brittle or melting in extremely hot or cold temperatures. Bees control the temperature of the hive by keeping it at 35°C, Thus, ensuring the wax is as malleable as possible for construction purposes.

From Wax to Oil

Following the intricate process of creation, comes the process of extraction. In order to transform the wax into an absolute, a process of purification with alcohol is required, in which, approximately, a heavy 100 kg of wax, only produces 1 kg of absolute! Nevertheless, it must be noted, that beeswax is in fact, among the few natural, ‘animalic’ notes in perfumery that are totally cruelty-free (i.e. involving no harm to the animal from which they are derived from).
