A Little History

Pieces of Myrrh.

A name that derives from the Hebrew words, ‘Murr’ or ‘Maror’, and ‘Murra’ or ‘Myrrha’ from Latin, all translates to “warm & bitter”; it undeniably outlines the resinous, warm, aromatic and slightly medicinal scent of Myrrh.

Throughout ancient cultures, it had great importance as one of the first gum-resins mentioned in history. Egyptians even used it in their perfumes and cosmetics. It was actually one of the components of Kyphi, the first perfume ever created, that was used to fumigate the temples. Ancient Egyptians also used the resin and its oil for domestic and religious purposes, such as burning over hot coals, before and during religious ceremonies, which was believed to release mysterious and spiritual presences.

For thousands of years, Ethiopia used myrrh for aromatherapy, due to its meditative quality. For instance, as a carrier oil, when blended with citrus oils, it would help to produce a more uplifting aroma, which would promote inspiration and emotional insight.

Travelling over continents, Myrrh was similarly and fondly used in medicine, in ancient China as a natural remedy. Till today, it remains a large part of traditional chinese medicine, and even modern medical professionals have a growing interest in using Myrrh to treat other medical issues.

Benefits and Modern Uses of Myrrh

Myrrh resin solidified on the tree.

As a powerful antioxidant, its health benefits include controlling blood sugar and heart rates, stimulating the immune system, and treating heart conditions; whilst also having anti-cancerous, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal benefits. Moreover, due to its antiseptic properties, it is commonly used in mouthwashes and toothpaste.

In addition, this precious resin even provides effective treatment for skin health and relaxation, justifying that the benefits of this enigmatic essential oil are endless, and continuously grow!

Extraction Process

Myrrh Tree Resin.

The ole-gum resin is extracted from the True Myrrh tree (Commiphora Myrrha), native to Arabia, Somalia, Oman, Yemen, and Ethiopia.

Commonly found growing in most desert areas, in order to obtain the resin from the tree, small incisions are made, from which the tree oozes small droplets of sap. After one to two weeks, the bead-like, yellow-brown sap solidifies on the tree before being collected and steam-distilled to produce the myrrh essential oil that every perfumer fights to get their hands on!
